Dance can express what words cannot, whether it's the triumphant joy in a football player's post-touchdown pirouette or the passionate tango used to notify roommates that the basement is flooding. Transmit tidings with twinkling toes thanks to today’s Groupon: for $48, you get a one-hour Argentine tango lesson plus a wine and dessert flight for two at The DelRay Ballroom and Lounge (a $96 value). This event is open only to Groupon holders and takes place Saturday, June 11 from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m.
Opened in 2001 by award-winning competitive dancer Shelley Brackhan Fritz, The DelRay Ballroom and Lounge brings boogie beginners and waltzing whizzes together with an insouciant blend of hoofing lessons and classy cocktails. The evening begins with experienced instructors leading groups of 20 students through a half-hour dance lesson in the basics of milonga—a fast-paced style of tango that combines Latin music's propulsive beat with tango's intimate embraces, smoldering intensity, and refreshing absence of throwing invisible lassos. Once you've learned how to perfectly synchronize feet with your lover or baffled tax auditor, you'll master the ability to land each step with the stylish precision of a flung dagger. After a 45-minute interlude, dancers return to the dance floor for another half-hour of scintillating steps amid the DelRay's elegant wood flooring, soft curtains, and exposed brick.
Throughout the rug-cutting, you'll romance taste buds with five pairings of Argentinean desserts and wine, starting with two during the 45 minutes before the lesson, two more during the 45-minute interim, and a final one to cap the night. The exotic flavors are a surprise, but a dulce de leche cheesecake bite might snuggle up to a Navarro Correas chardonnay, or a churro might find itself locking eyes across the room with a Trapiche oak-cask pinot noir.
