All good detective novels start with at least 30 pages describing the detective eating a hearty meal. Gratify gastronome and gumshoe desires with today’s Groupon. For $39, you’ll get sips, savories, and sleuthing at The Dinner Detective Murder Mystery Dinner Show, a whodunit dinner party (a $69 value). Reservations and your entree and dessert selections must be made in advance by email.
Put your detective skills and ability to sniff out scents hundreds of yards away to good use as the show unfolds amid four courses at the Embassy Suites in Santa Ana. A troupe of actors pose as average patrons in the audience, so even the most instinctually astute will be left throwing around false accusations and making citizen arrests.
Slyly scope out the scene while amusing your bouche with vegetable spring rolls or other appetizers upon arrival. Guests will enjoy a mixed green salad before indulging in the night’s chicken Dijon dinner. If you are a vegetarian, please specify this when you redeem your Groupon for a vegetarian pasta primavera entree. Strategize potential suspects between forkfuls of chocolate, carrot, or cheesecake, and sips of complimentary coffee. There’s also a full cash bar.
Shows take place Fridays and Saturdays. Doors open at 6:15 p.m. or 7:45 p.m., and the show will start promptly at 6:30 p.m or 8 p.m. Your Groupon includes tax and server gratuity, but gratuity is not included for the show’s actors. Free parking is available in the hotel lot.

The Dinner Detective spreads its suspense around California and surrounding states, but CityVoter awarded the Orange County location Best Dinner Theater in 2008, and Kayte Deioma of About.com loved the show in LA: > * Did I do it? Did I have means, motive and opportunity? Well I can’t tell you that, now can I? But I did have a darn good time! – Kayte Deioma
Citysearchers give the LA location 4.5 stars: > * We enjoyed top notch entertainment! I highly recommend a Dinner Detective evening over any overpriced musical theater ticket! Plus the food was fantastic! – GabiJane > * My husband and I have been to alot of these and this one is by far the most fun. I went to a few in Los Angeles and in Orange County a few years ago and they weren’t anything like this. Really funny and talented actors. – alicegunthry

About The Dinner Detective
The Dinner Detective eschews campy costumes and plots for an exciting evening of food-accompanied mystery and paranoia, where actors hide among the diners, playing innocent and making everyone a potential suspect. To solve the crime, guests freely interrogate one another, chivvying out clues about the murderer and determining who has a bloodthirsty look in their eyes. Between dramatic deaths and simulated police involvement, guests dig into three-course meals, washed down with bottomless iced tea, coffee, and drinks from the cash bar. The diner who comes closest to solving the mystery through their snooping goes home with a prize basket to show off to their friends or split with the murderer as per their shadowy conspiracy. Prop guns and gunshot sound effects may be used during the performance.
