Since humans are mostly made of water, and fish traditionally inhabit water, fish should naturally occur in the human body. Fix this gap in nature’s logic with today’s Groupon: $10 gets you $25 worth of sushi, cocktails, and Japanese cuisine at The Drunken Fish. AOL City Guides named The Drunken Fish Best Sushi, and the multi-faceted den of deliciousness was one of Sauce readers’ top two favorite Japanese/sushi places for 2009.

Practice your chopstick skills with salmon (two pieces over rice, $5) or octopus (two pieces over rice, $4) sushi before moving on to one of The Drunken Fish’s elegantly plated maki rolls. Try the signature Drunken Fish Roll, tightly wrapped with shrimp tempura, asparagus, and Japanese mayo and crowned with tuna, sprouts, masago, tempura crumbs, and eel sauce (eight pieces, $14.50); it will fill your mouth with raw fish in a much more enjoyable fashion than that time you tried to chug your aquarium. Sushi newbies, meanwhile, may enjoy the familiar flavors of a Philly roll with salmon, avocado, and cream cheese (eight pieces, $7.50), and can even opt to get it deep-fried tempura-style and topped with eel sauce ($8.50) before venturing on to more exotically named fare such as the Red Dragon Roll (eight pieces, $13.50) and the Spiderman Roll (eight pieces, $16.75).

While wielding a bite-sized piece of sushi with chopsticks is challenge enough for some, experts may need more of a challenge. Test your finger-stilts on such dinner entrees as salmon teriyaki with miso soup and house salad ($17.75) or your choice of soba or udon noodles stir-fried with zucchini, carrots, onion, cabbage, and mushrooms ($10). If your fish is not sufficiently drunk, give it something saucy to swim in with a cocktail, such as the sake waterfall—a heady mixture of sake, vodka, and watermelon schnapps with a touch of lime ($7).

Your Groupon is good at your choice of The Drunken Fish’s three locations at Laclede’s Landing, Central West End, and Westport Plaza in Maryland Heights. Though each of The Drunken Fish’s locations offers a different vibe, they share a slick and modern look punctuated by clean furniture lines, a hip bar lit from overhead, and geometric-patterned earth tones, such as pebble, rust, and chocolate. Reservations are recommended.

Reviews

The Drunken Fish won Best Sushi from AOL City Guides, and bartender Joel Dycus and his Blue-Eyed Asian martini are nominated by ALIVE magazine for its 2010 Iron Bartender contest:

Fish-eating reviewers give high marks to the restaurant's sushi and prices. Citysearchers award all locations 3.5 to five stars, and 71% to 80% of Urbanspooners are willing to put down the spoon and pick up some chopsticks:

  • It can be so disappointing to go to a trendy restaurant and be let down by bad food..that is NEVER the case at Drunken Fish. I have been eating there (and the other locations) for years and am always pleased. The staff is super friendly and takes the time to get to know the regulars. They also help to make sushi more approachable for people intimidated by it. I wouldn't go anywhere else in STL for sushi. – GoodEats82, Urbanspoon
  • Awesome, creative, delicious, exciting, unforgetable [sic], and amazing! You have to visit The Drunken Fish… – DJ…
  • This is the perfect date spot. The booths are quite, cozy and private. Service was awesome and food was even better! – Lish, Citysearch
