The Evolution of Hip Hop
Alexandra Bernard fell under hip-hop's spell as a child. By high school, she was the choreographer for a local reggae artist; by college, she'd snagged the role of creative director for the university dance program and was hosting a radio show about hip-hop. As an adult, she's choreographed for rappers and other musical artists, performed with Ludacris and T.I., and worked with MTV and BET. But at The Evolution of Hip Hop, she plays just one role: teacher.
“Hip hop is not just a music genre; it’s a culture, a feeling, a groove, a lifestyle," she writes on the dance studio's website. Alexandra and her instructors invite students into this world in their hip-hop dance classes. The Evolution of Hip Hop aims to provide quality and affordable performing arts instruction through to the tri-state area, training students to contribute to the culture's future. True to the Evolution name, teachers start with the basics, such as how to punctuate "hip-hop," and then build up students until everyone can crump, vogue, and tutt. Even if dance isn't your preferred mode of expression, Alexandra and her staff also teach mixing and scratching with a professional DJ, MCing and rapping, beatboxing and music production in a state-of-the-art recording space, and even graffiti and urban art in their spacious studios.
