The Flying Tomato Festival
In the morning, you might mistake The Flying Tomato Festival for the world's largest Italian cooking festival; during the calm of the registration period, baskets of tomatoes sit quietly, dreaming of a future as a spaghetti sauce or pizza topping. The atmosphere changes come 12:30 p.m.; the music grows louder, the MC takes the mic, and thousands of people put on protective goggles. After a quick countdown and a blast from a horn, madness reigns. Soon, each person present grabs as many tomatoes as he or she can and start hurling the produce at friends, family, and complete strangers. The spectacle recreates the celebratory madness of Spain's La Tomatina festival, and for a good reason; proceeds from The Flying Tomato Festival benefit Action Against Hunger, a non-profit leading the charge against juvenile malnourishment the world over. When not throwing tomatoes or helping out charities, attendees dance to live music and dine on food from local vendors, who for some reason never run out of ketchup.
