About The Gondola Getaway
The Gondola Getaway is the first and largest fleet of Gondolas in America, conceptualized in 1982. Long Beach and its Naples Islands are an official Sister/Friendship City with Venezia, Italia. The Gondola Getaway is part of the official "Little Italy district" of Long Beach. They offer Romantic adventures through the enchanting canals of the 100+ year old upscale neighborhood of Naples. The Gondola Getaway has boats that seat 2, 4, 6 and 14 where you can even enjoy the "Pizza" cruise, the only one in the world. The Gondola Getaway is perfect for romantic couples, friends sharing a couple bottles of wine, or even families from 4 to 14.
The Gondola Getaway was created during a Marketing Class at the University of Southern California. As a student , Michael OToole created a gondola business located in his childhood playground, Naples Islands. He traveled to Venezia to learn how the gondolas were built and rowed. He started with two oars as that was a technique he knew best, learned as a lifeguard rowing dories. As the years went on the Venetian technique was mastered and he started to build gondolas that could be rowed with a single oar as in Venice. In 1985 a team from the Gondola Getaway was invited to participate in a rowing regatta in Venezia called the Vogalonga. The Gondola Getaway has now been participating in the Vogalonga for 32 years. They have brought back a fleet of Venetian boats over the years along with the soul and traditions of the Ancient city of Venezia. Viva Venezia, Viva Gondola Getaway!!
