As young people age out of the foster system in Philadelphia, about half of them will experience homelessness. Often a lack of support, structure, and job skills can compound and perpetuate the situation of homelessness. Hand2Paw connects teenagers who are emerging from homelessness with volunteer opportunities at local animal shelters, selecting especially dedicated volunteers for six-week paid internships.
In addition to building a connection with the social services they require to help them transition into independent adult life, Hand2Paw interns also receive guidance from mentors, a transportation stipend, and job training in one of a number of specialty areas such as kennel attendance, dog training, grooming, and assistance in the veterinary or surgical clinics. Hands-on experience allows the teens to play with the animals, bathe and feed them, and learn the positive reinforcement methods of basic obedience training. Hand2Paw continues to provide support for those interns who choose to seek a career in animal care after the program has ended. In addition to professional training, young people also get access to the therapeutic experience of interacting with animals and the satisfaction of helping to address the issue of large-scale domestic-animal euthanasia that is in part due to a lack of volunteers available to care for them. As a nonprofit organization, Hand2Paw relies on donations to be able to fund paid internships.
Join G-Team and donate $10 to help fund a paid animal shelter internship for a teen emerging from homelessness. If G-Team members raise $500, Hand2Paw can fund one paid internship for six weeks. Each additional donation will go toward funding an internship for another teen.
Unlike traditional Groupon deals, G-Team campaigns typically don't offer you a "discount" or "savings." So "buyer" beware—when you click "Buy" to donate your time or money to a worthwhile G-Team cause, the only discount you may receive is 100% off free, priceless karma. Read more about G-Team.
