The House of the Seven Gables

Even if you've never been to the House of the Seven Gables, you've likely heard of it. Immortalized in Nathaniel Hawthorne's classic novel of the same name, this national historic landmark district stands as an iconic symbol of New England history. Built in 1668 by sea captain John Turner, the mansion later housed Hawthorne's relatives before Caroline Emmerton opened up a museum to support her settlement house work in historic Salem, MA. Today, the Seven Gables campus—which now includes Hawthorne's relocated birth home and other historic structures—serves as a museum and event space. Gardens texturize the already scenic seaside grounds, which host weddings, Loch Ness monster arrivals, and other special events throughout the year. The museum still honors Emmerton's dual mission of preserving historic buildings and serving newly arriving immigrant families with educational and citizenship opportunities.
