What You'll Get
The House Theatre’s world-premiere rides the roots-folk revival into deeper territory as it explores the growing gospel spirit of a group of beaten-down women in a 1930s Appalachian coal-mining town. Life is hard, until a country preacher comes to town to show them the power of spirit and song. But as their religious fervor grows, so does the threat of violence and mayhem. Chicago composer and fiddler Jess McIntosh created an old-time country-flavored, foot-stomping score for The Revel, which playwright Damon Kiely loosely based on Euripides’ Greek tragedy The Bacchae and which is now making its debut at Chopin Theatre Mainstage.
