What You'll Get
After a series of strenuous shouts reunited long-separated Marco and Polo, the estranged brothers quickly rediscovered their tragic incompatibility. Find a place in your heart for polo with today's deal: $10 gets you one general-admission ticket to any fall match at The Houston Polo Club (a $20 value). Cups and tournaments run weekly until November 14, and the full schedule is available online.
Similar to its aquatic cousin, land-based polo is a horse-mounted combination of treading turf for long periods of time and unprovoked splashing. In a series of seven-minute periods—or as the poloish call them, chukkers—players use their mallet-shaped arms to move the ball down the field. Commonly thought of as a gentleman's game, polo is still a legitimate contact sport allowing legal horse bumping, mallet-on-mallet hooking, and the occasional unicorn ramming. The croquet and pony ride turned impressive athletic display makes a fitting outing for dreamy-eyed little sisters and sports-hungry big bros to share quality time amidst equine feats.
Since 1928, The Houston Polo Club's 26 acres has played host to many horse-powered bouts. As a result of this rich history, the grounds were awarded the honor of showcasing the United States Polo Association's Silver Cup—one of the most prestigious prizes in the sport—in 1998. On championship Sundays, it’s a common sight to see spectators of all ages, genders, and species lining the grandstands to witness the battle for mallet-wielding supremacy.
