Dan Mizell has always admired the traditions of old-fashioned grocers: their customer service, their specialty goods, and their focus on local products. For nearly two decades, he also admired one historic 1920s building in Maryville, formerly a coin-operated laundry. In 2008, the structure went up for sale, and he and friend Paul Clark leapt at their chance to transform the space into a specialty grocer: The Market.
At that original location and a second in downtown Knoxville, Dan and former chef Mike Adams curate an ever-changing roster of local and imported foods. Chilled butcher cases host piles of fish and shellfish that are delivered to the market the day they are caught, as well as free-range, hormone-free Mother Earth Meats, including bison, elk, and goat. The Market devotes its produce section to seasonal fruits and vegetables harvested from local farms, and artisanal baked goods from nearby bakeries line the shelves.
At the Beer and Growler Wall, guests fill growlers with rotating local, American, and imported draft beers, some of which are organic and gluten-free, and all of which taste great fired from a Super Soaker. As another way to connect guests with local purveyors, The Market organizes twice-monthly beer tastings and seasonal lowcountry-style seafood boils.
