The Melting Pot
Built in 1929, the Packard Motor Sales Building used to be filled with the racket of hundreds of clacking typewriters. Today, the St. Charles St. landmark is home to a different sound: dozens of bubbling cauldrons. That's par for the course at fondue hot spot The Melting Pot, where couples gather to cast romantic spells over one another as they dip breads and vegetables into melted cheese and share meats and seafoods prepared in oil. They all wield double-pronged spears—or fondue forks—to suspend the tasty morsels of their choice in the ambrosial selections before them, which are cleverly heated by stovetops built into each and every table in The Melting Pot's restaurants. The chefs prepare most platters in sizes best shared by two, making the venue ideal for date nights or reunions with twins who left 10 years ago to study the art of fondue. Guests can also augment their multi-course fondue feasts with one of the restaurant's 1,200 bottles of wine; sourced from around the world, they're now on display in a massive 14-foot wine room just inside the front door.
Despite its reputation for hosting intimate rendezvous, The Melting Pot of New Orleans is also equipped for larger gatherings, including business lunches, wedding receptions, or simple night out with friends. In addition to overseeing these gatherings, staffers use the restaurant to invest in their community as well. They host charity events, school fundraisers, and even run a program to reward straight-A students with a free fondue dinner.
