After crocodators, poor fitness is the number-one cause of the night-scaries. With today's Groupon, turn the nightmare where you end up bare-bellied in biology class into a dream of goddess-like energy and strong, snake-charming abs: for $20, you get a month of belly-dancing classes at Mystic Dream Dance Company on North Oak Street. Currently, classes are scheduled at 5 p.m. Wednesdays, though the academy will add more slots to accommodate any belly-busting demand.
Mystik Dream Dance Company, one of the only studios in the state devoted solely to belly dancing, provides curious students with an in-depth exploration of the artful, physical, and cultural benefits of performing upbeat Egyptian cabaret, also known as Oriental dance or raks sharki (dance of the east). During classes, the studio's enthusiastic instructors, many of whom grew up attached at the hip to their abdominal art form, gyrate through basic movements, rhythms, and improvisational tips. Then, the flowing experts lead newly learned abdominals through the rigors of body core strength, performance posture, and how to make a Sharpied-on belly-face look like it's laughing.
After four weeks of fundamentals and funtastic exploration, students can choose to continue to new styles or more-advanced levels—advanced students often audition to join the studio's professional troupe.
