The Original Taco House
Gene and Natha Waddle first opened the Original Taco House in 1960, introducing many Portland residents to handmade tamales, tacos doused in zesty salsa, and burritos stuffed with pulled pork. Locals loved the meals so much that today, more than 50 years later, the eatery sells its house salsa, enchilada sauce, and salad dressing wholesale. (They even have a separate, standalone kitchen called the Annex that's devoted entirely to making these sauces).
Despite the eatery's dedication to these condiments, it doesn't mean that the cooks are any less passionate about the rest of the menu. Available in hard and soft varieties, just like decorative pillows, their street tacos come stuffed with delicacies like pork verde, fish with pineapple-mango salsa, or a vegetarian mixture of potato and green chile. There's also a sizable selection of gooey dips, sizzling fajitas, and wet burritos.
