Stravinsky's groundbreaking ballet Le Sacre du printemps (The Rite of Spring) caused a near riot during its 1913 Paris premiere, thanks to its unsettling ritualistic movements and innovative folk-influenced rhythms. And all of this happened before they reached the scene in which a girl is chosen to dance herself to death to appease the pagan gods. Philadelphia Orchestra takes on this monumental work under the baton of Cristian Macelaru at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts. You'll also hear Prokofiev's whimsical, neo-Classical Symphony No. 1 and Ginastera's Variaciones concertantes, featuring multiple soloists and drawing from Argentinian folk harmonies.
