Angela Toler, a 21-year Air Force veteran, and her staff frame The Picky Deli’s 1/4-pound mounds of hand-sliced deli meats with sub rolls, croissants, and tomato basil or spinach wraps. Among a dozen sandwiches on the menu, the Reuben populates rye bread with shaved corned beef and sauerkraut for a meal as classic as a grilled cheese with chrome tailfins. Made from a special house recipe, the chicken salad accessorizes a bed of romaine lettuce with tomato pillows, and tuna salad swims among buoys of chopped hard-boiled eggs and sweet relish. On Fridays only, Angela serves gumbo and drizzles a grilled shrimp po boy sandwich with a special sauce, while Wednesdays and Thursdays see other weekly specials. Ferns and potted plants branch out around eclectic furnishings inside The Picky Deli, kept in line by constant glimpses into the fate of other fresh vegetables.
