During an in-depth 60-minute tour—conducted by the non-profit organization Plant Chicago—visitors explore the 93,500-square-foot self-sustaining warehouse and learn about aquaponic farming, renewable energy, and other urban food and environmental issues.
Plant Chicago is an educational nonprofit providing tours of The Plant, a 95,000-square-foot former meatpacking plant repurposed into a sustainable food hub. During tours, visitors learn about indoor and outdoor farms, composting, and urban agriculture experiments, and receive an overview of The Plant's closed-loop systems. Visitors also witness the installation of The Plant's massive anaerobic digester which will eventually process over 30 tons of food waste per day, generating renewable heat and electricity for the building.
Additionally, on Saturdays, Plant Chicago operates a farmers market and farmstand in its outdoor farmspace that offers a variety of produce, food, and goods, including many local and organic options.
