Airbrush Makeup: A Flawless Finish
Airbrush makeup can grant a smooth look with one quick spray. Check out Groupon’s guide to learn more about this unconventional cosmetic.
The year was 1923, and Hollywood makeup artists had a problem. Around the set of Ben-Hur milled dozens of extras, all ready to fill crowd scenes in the most expensive movie of the silent age—and all needed makeup. So instead of asking everyone to bob for apples in a vat of liquid foundation, the makeup artists concocted a spray. In the decades since, the lightweight pigment has become a go-to finish on-screen and off.
Like traditional foundation, airbrush makeup creates the look of a more even complexion. Because it’s dispensed as a cloud of uniform, microscopic color particles, it can make a more seamless coat than brushes or sponges, and, given a skilled makeup artist, a much lighter one. At the base of the airbrush gun, a compressor uses a diaphragm to create pressurized air, which flows through a hose and into the gun. When the applicator is filled with makeup, the air turns it into a fine mist.
Along with being fast and smooth, the procedure is highly sanitary, since the makeup artist never touches the skin. The lighter coverage keeps the makeup from streaking, running, or fading, and the evenness of the mist helps skin looks fresh even under the scrutiny of the camera’s lens—a major draw for brides whose weddings will be broadcast in HDTV.
