The Refuge

The Refuge is so named because golfers do exactly that: Take refuge amid towering pines and oak trees on a meticulously maintained course, raised from a hardwood swamp and designed by renowned course architect Roy Case. A true “thinker’s course,” golfers must navigate The Refuge’s various water and swamp hazards. This comes into play particularly on the eighth hole, where the green is protected by water hidden from the tee. Though the hole is relatively short and long hitters may be tempted to drive the green, many balls find their way into the hazard, and those that don’t must deal with one of the most undulating greens on the course and its army of wild caddies. Between strokes, golfers can marvel at the abundant wildlife as they meander across an old wooden bridge lined with sawgrass and Spanish moss.

Players can warm up or cool down on the range, which is also home to the USGA/LPGA Mary Ann Edge Junior Girls Golf School of Mississippi. Junior golfers can take it easy on the Wee Links at The Refuge, a three-hole course that juniors can play for free and adults can only play under child supervision. The full-service pro shop stocks gear and apparel, and the clubhouse and grill serve up tasty fare such as burgers and quesadillas.
