The Rosenbach of the Free Library of Philadelphia

Most book-lovers consider all libraries invaluable. So just imagine how they feel about one whose collection includes the only surviving copy of the very first Poor Richard Almanac. When the book-dealing Rosenbach brothers passed away in 1954, they left behind an incomparable collection including that book and the manuscript of Ulysses. Today the library has expanded to include Bram Stoker's notes for Dracula and more than 400,000 other works of fine art and historic artifacts.

  • Size: besides the main collection in the Rosenbach's original home, the museum has expanded into the Maurice Sendak Building next door
  • Eye Catcher: the Rosenbach can be found on the 2000 block of Delancey place
  • The Building: the 1865 townhouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and can be explored only with guided tours offered on the hour
  • Permanent Mainstay: modernist poet Marianne Moore's entire living room now resides at the Rosenbach, having been transported piecemeal and reassembled on-site
  • Don't Miss: the lively event schedule, which includes temporary exhibits spotlighting influential authors, reading groups focused on local writers, and concerts by musician-in-residence Dave Burrell

Customer Reviews

I really enjoyed my visit there and the docent that gave the tour was knowledgeable and engaging. There are some very special items in the collection there at the library as well as Philip's collection.
