Sea cucumbers, the camels of the ocean, have the fantastic ability to survive for up to half a year without lunch. For those who can't make it that long, today's Groupon supplies the midday fare. For $5, you'll get $10 worth of gourmet salads, sandwiches, soups, and sweets at The Rubber Duck, a Coral Gables early-afternoon mealtime mainstay for more than 10 years.
Insomniacs and early risers can take advantage of the Duck's modest morning taste menu. Salute the sunrise with a steamy hot chocolate ($2.50) and mini-croissant slathered in apple jelly ($.80) or try the fruit salad ($2.30). For lunch, the choices expand delightfully, like a magically growing animal tablet submerged in the bathtub. From fishy (Two Scoops salad with tuna salad) to fruity (Old Dixie chicken salad with orange sections), salad options run the gamut ($7.10 and up). Wraps, stuffed baguettes, sandwiches, and subs round out the menu.
The Rubber Duck features an assortment of supplemental sweets and snacks. Add a slice of cheesecake ($2) or a freshly baked cookie ($.80) to orders for a midday sweet fix. This Groupon is valid for dine-in, carryout, or delivery (available to Coral Gables area only for an additional fee). The Rubber Duck is open weekdays only, from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
The Miami New Times offers this rave review of The Rubber Duck:
- Homemade chicken salad is chunky and flecked with bits of red onion and celery, the roast honey turkey quite moist, and "The Almost Cuban" on grilled baguette delicious, but even better on pressed panini as an "Almost Midnight Sandwich." The Rubber Duck Club Deluxe, on soft, fresh baguette, comes piled with turkey breast, bacon, Swiss cheese, romaine, tomatoes, and, like all sandwiches, a choice of aioli mayo, Dijon mustard, honey mustard, or apricot mustard (this last spread matches particularly well with the roast pork sandwich). – Lee Klein
