What You'll Get
Some people are born to run; some are born to scramble up and down slopes like a Tokay gecko. Unleash your inner lizard with today's Groupon to climbers' paradise: for $40, you get one half-day outdoor rock-climbing program from The Southern Terrain (an $85 value). Programs are conducted on Wednesdays starting May 5th from 4–8 p.m., Saturdays from 8 a.m.–noon, and again on Saturdays from 2–6 p.m. A signed waiver is necessary before heading for the hills, which climbers can get here. Prospective grapplers must be at least 10 years old to participate in the program.
The setting for each ascending adventure is Mission Trails Regional Park's Visitor Center, which is about 20 minutes northeast of downtown San Diego. After a 20-minute, moderately paced hike to The Southern Terrain's designated climbing area, climbers will don helmet and harness in preparation for the cliff-conquering crusade. Under the supervision of The Southern Terrain's certified guides, guests will hoist themselves to breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape while fighting off the distracting riddles of mountain goats. No climbing experience is necessary, with group instruction given prior to the upward journey.
Based in San Diego, The Southern Terrain organizes adventure trips all around the world, with this half-day excursion being one of the many thrill-seeking thrillers one may seek. All technical gear is included, as are water, snacks, and mountains. Hikers are responsible for bringing their own hiking or running shoes. Special climbing shoes are not required unless you want to join the special-climbing-shoes club, a secret society devoted to telling candlelit ghost stories in tree houses. Call ahead to schedule your appointment.
La Jolla Light says:
- An excursion led by Southern Terrain is more than a hiking tour - it's an adventure...What [Kevin] Jackson promises people will get from a Southern Terrain excursion is a true sense of personal accomplishment. "What people get out of this is experiencing life," he said, "and the reward of increasing their self-confidence and their physical abilities." – Dave Schwab

About The Southern Terrain
Kayakers glide past ice shelves in the glacial waters of Patagonia. A continent over, hikers pose for a picture at the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro—the highest point in Africa—before looking out onto the Tanzanian landscape. The Southern Terrain's team of licensed, bonded, and insured outdoor enthusiasts coordinates once-in-a-lifetime trips like these to storied destinations around the world.
To facilitate safe and memorable experiences, fitness experts arrange adventure-training programs so that explorers arrive ready not only to climb, hike, and kayak, but also to handle elevated altitudes. The professionally guided excursions typically maintain a traveler-to-guide ratio of eight to one. To support eco-friendly travel, The Southern Terrain partners with the nonprofit program iJourney Green, which helps adventurers to sustain the parts the world they visit.
