Jordi Savall is a world-renowned expert on early music - compositions from the Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque eras that must be performed on special instruments no longer in wide use today. Over the course of his career, Savall's performances with the viola da gamba have brought renewed popularity and interest to this once forgotten musical instrument of the Medieval era. In this performance at Mandel Hall at the University of Chicago, Savall plays historic Irish and Scots folk tunes, using traditional instruments to harken back to the songs' strong, simple and emotional messages.
