Shakespeare's sonnets get a fresh new spin in world premiere event Music in the Time of Shakespeare. Commemorating the 400th anniversary of The Bard's death, this UChicago Arts winter concert features selections of sacred music in the High Renaissance style -- including legendary composer Thomas Tallis' famed Lamentations -- followed by the secular music of Shakespeare's day, sung by the Decani, the twelve-voice professional vocal ensemble of Rockefeller Chapel. These are paired with settings of Shakespearean texts written by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Shulamit Ran. The performance will evoke everything from the street sounds to the high society scene of Shakespeare's day.
Running time is one hour and 30 minutes, with one intermission.
Shakespeare scholar David Bevington will give a pre-concert talk on Elizabethan drama at 6:30 pm.
