The Unscriptables improv troupe takes to the stage of Funhouse Lounge twice every Saturday night. At 8 p.m., shows touch on topical themes and use inventive games that involve the audience. In order to maintain their rep as “the best in unscripted theatre,” The Unscriptables Domprov show at 10 p.m. defers to the unconventional motivational tactics of two leather-clad Eastern European dominatrices. Mistress Ivana or Mistress Kiki (depending on the night) commandeers the proceedings and forces the improvisers to play games off the top of their heads, doling out prizes or punishment as she sees fit—though it is often difficult to tell which is which. Possibilities include getting pelted with marshmallows by the audience or getting a firm talking-to. For obvious reasons, this is an adults-only show.
Andy Barrett and Trenton Shine don't serve draft beer at Funhouse Lounge, mostly because they can't. If they created space for the refrigeration, there would be no room for the stage—and consequently no poetry readings, no bawdy bingo, no dominatrix-hosted improv, no costumed dance parties, no live-action B-movies involving cheerleader werewolves from outer space. Thankfully, the clientele prefers to stick to bottles, cans, housemade sangria, and straightforward cocktails such as the Gin Zipper rather than compromise the Funhouse's modern-day cabaret vibe. Carnival imagery dots the lounge's walls, with one corner devoted exclusively to a coulrophobia¬-triggering pile-up of clown portraits. The menu—like the bare rafters and dive-bar leather booths—keeps it simple with a "food truck mentality" of sandwiches, soups, salads, and a special happy hour menu.
