The Washington Midsummer Renaissance Faire is one of the state’s largest theatrical events, filling three weekends with full-contact jousting, equestrian acrobatics, roving musical troupes, and mind-bending magicians. Like college-town bar crawls and handmade quilts, each weekend has a different theme: pirates (August 6–7), fairies and fantasy (August 13–14), and Her Majesty’s Royal Masquerade (August 20–21). Each weekend features a vast collection of performers, such as Celtic and folk music troupes, dancers, and the daredevils of the Cavallo Equestrian Arts, who thrill audiences with two shows: a live jousting competition using lances and shields and a gypsy-themed performance featuring daredevil Cossack riding and horse-top acrobatics. Colorful Carnivale masks are worn by many performers during the third weekend's festivities, and guests may mirror the freedom of unknown identities by having their faces painted or visiting an on-site mask maker. Attendees are encouraged to come dressed in costumes or take the family troll for a stroll round the grounds.
Enormous crispy turkey legs, smoky barbecued treats, fresh ears of corn, and many other delicious delicacies are on hand to quell knight-sized appetites.
