Cool people and great food.

What You'll Get

According to folk etymologists, the term barbecue is derived from the French barbe coup, referring to the annual pig picking commemorating the infamous Bearded Rebellion. For $10, you get $25 worth of barbecued eats and saucy drinks at The Waterwheel Lounge, a Ballard-area eatery that marries sauce-slathered favorites of a backyard party with the cheerful ambience of a field-trip bus on the last week of school.

Listed as one of dive-bar aficionado Mike Seely's top ten watering holes, The Waterwheel Lounge takes outdoor tasting to levels unseen since roofless kitchens were all the rage with nightly events, live music, and a focused menu of celebrated favorites. Bust out the wipes and wrap hands around an ambitiously portioned brisket sandwich ($7.95) served with cole slaw and baked beans. Wings, served hot or not ($7.50), hand-cut fries ($3.50), and onion rings ($4) side well with ice-cold suds and expansive patio views. After 4 p.m., indulge in the famous fried chicken, a trifecta of comfort with gravy-smothered mashed potatoes and a side of veggies ($9.95). Feast upon bigger bites such as beer dogs ($1), barbecue ribs ($11.95), or a chef's salad ($6.50) without the fuss of a well-meaning dad who insists he put the Q in BBQ.

Nightly events, including Rock Band, poker, and karaoke, add to The Waterwheel's playful charm. Post up on Ballard's most expansive patio while proudly doused in sauce, take advantage of complimentary Wi-Fi, or head indoors for some ping pong and pool. While you enjoy the amenities, an attentive staff that can be easily summoned via the ring of a bell or telepathy is on constant standby, awaiting orders for another round. Visit The Waterwheel Lounge on Sunday afternoons to catch live entertainment from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., or stop by on Tuesdays for outdoor bingo from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

The Waterwheel Lounge is famous, having been featured in the book Seattle's Best Dive Bars by Mike Seely.

More than 50 Yelpers give The Waterwheel Lounge a nearly perfect 4.5 stars:
