For the inexperienced beveragist, there are few experiences more embarrassing than sipping wine at a fancy party and exclaiming, "Attention, everyone. Some rapscallion has poisoned the grape juice!" Today's Groupon prevents your public humiliation with a Head First into Wine class at The Wine Cellar for $18 (a $39 value). The class is about 90 minutes and takes place every Sunday at 4 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Classes start in January and end in March.
For being the shop with the second-largest wine volume in Portland, the family-owned Wine Cellar provides all the approachable coziness of your Aunt Jolene's wine cellar, only with more wine and fewer pun-spewing crypt keepers. It's an ideal atmosphere for the shop's Head First into Wine class, which will teach you an arsenal of wine-drinker's vocabulary so that you can describe your taste experience more articulately than is possible with your current system of grunts and throat-clicks. Your knowledgeable, friendly teacher will also introduce you to the rules of etiquette for wine-tasting, as well as the less-common wine-duel. They'll even transform your oafish sloshing into an artful swirling technique. By the end, you'll have gained a sturdy understanding of one of the world's oldest beverages, along with which wines pair well with which foods.
