In a proper tasting, wine must be held up to the light to gauge its color, tossed on a cat's back to judge its acidity, and sipped through a crazy straw to annoy the host. Become the toast of any tasting with today's Groupon: for $20, you get a wine-tasting class at The Wine Smarties (a $40 value). Today's deal is valid for your choice between two classes offered at both the San Diego and Carlsbad locations.
Founded and owned by Lindsay Pomeroy, a wine educator certified advanced by the Wine & Spirits Education Trust, The Wine Smarties educates skilled vintners and aspiring novices alike with an array of classes and comprehensive tools. The popular 90-minute World of Wine 101 course acquaints newcomers with the fundamentals of wine tasting and educates them about structure, aroma, and the differences between Old and New World–styles of winemaking. Students will also study terroir⎯a concept focusing on how local geology, soil chemistry, and winemakers' mood swings effect the character of each wine.
Novices and initiates to the slurpy mysteries of sipping may otherwise choose to partake in the two-hour Blind Tasting Like a Pro 101 course, practicing the proper identification and enjoyment of wines, Carmen Sandiego–style, from classical viticulture regions, with five wines degustated from each. Classes are currently scheduled through April, with more to be added soon.
