On Joel Coliseum Annex Ice Rink’s crystalline skating surface, ice carvers jovially mingle and practice maneuvers during frequent public-skate hours. After lacing up a pair of bladed boots and wobbling to the rink’s entrance, skaters can venture out onto the ice, flying across the slippery terrain like penguins running down a slip ‘n slide. On Friday nights, a live DJ blasts requested tunes from 7:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. to enliven pirouettes and pratfalls. Guests can purchase concessions and earn prizes by competing in frosty games or by accurately guessing the number of ice shavings scattered across the rink.

About Winston-Salem Fairground Annex Ice Rink
Nestled behind the LJVM Coliseum—an arena that has hosted events ranging from the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship to Billy Joel concerts—stands The Winston-Salem Fairground Annex Ice Rink. The ice rink hosts public ice-skating, hockey leagues, and events throughout the year. Visitors can strap on their own cleaver-healed boots or a pair of rentals and take to the ice for public-skate sessions, youth and adult hockey, or figure-skating lessons. A live DJ serenades skaters during Friday Night Ice Jam, providing a fun soundtrack as skaters loop the official-size rink. The skating center also opens for groups and special events such as birthdays and office-ditch days.
