In 1971, conceptual artist Chris Burden was shot in the arm with a rifle. The crazy part? He asked his assistant to fire the gun at him for a performance piece. The play I Want to Destroy You is inspired by Burden's radical and provocative career. Harold became a famous artist after he had a friend shoot him in the arm in a gallery. Now, though, he has a house, a child and a tenure-track teaching job. Who is he to tell a student not to bring a gun to class? Troubling and at turns funny, this play at Portland's Shoe Box Theater asks probing questions about ethics, education, class, violence, middle age and roofing.
This show is recommended for age 16 and older.
Running time for this show is two hours and 15 minutes with a 15-minute intermission.
