About Thoa’s Restaurant & Lounge
Owner and chef Thoa Nguyen lived the first 11 years of her life in Saigon before traveling to America with her family. There, she found her voice in cooking as she found creative ways to prepare food for her siblings; as the oldest of five with parents each working two jobs, it was a passion in part born from necessity. As Nguyen became a professional, though, she experimented with Pacific Island and Chinese cuisines. She didn’t return to her roots until after she volunteered with a group that sponsors the removal of land mines from Vietnam, according to the Seattle PI. Back in her home country for the first time, she was inspired by familiar foods and flavors. This trip motivated her to open her own restaurant, Thoa’s Restaurant & Lounge, which is a reflection of who she is. She told Seattle PI, “This is Thoa.”
The Seattle Times praised Thoa’s brand of Vietnamese cuisine, which is characterized by a minimal use of oil, generous bouquets of fresh herbs, and a balanced approach to “heating” and “cooling” ingredients. She sizzles spicy garlic prawns and scallops, and vietnamese steak frites reflect diverse culinary traditions. These meals unfold in a serene dining room that features bamboo pillars and lamps, soft lighting, and splashes of greenery.
