Rosa's father is in a serious automobile accident, an event that draws the young woman back to her childhood home. She soon finds herself in a hospital waiting room, surrounded by the large an judgmental Italian-Canadian Catholic family she fled from just two years prior. As events begin to unfold and cause her to feel increasingly suffocated, she turns to her imaginary lover, Amante. This almost heavenly man encourages not only Rosa, but also her stepmother and her grandmother to let themselves experience the type of physical love expressly forbidden in their culture. Espresso packs a flavorful punch as it challenges and explores the religious and cultural norms we often take for granted. See it this May at The Side Project Theatre.
Running time is approximately two hours, with a 10-minute intermission.
This show is recommended for ages 18 and up due to mature language and sexual discussion.
