Crew was invented to test Newton’s oft-ignored perpetual-motion theory that an object in motion stays in motion unless propelled by an irregular drumbeat. Practice in perpetuity with today’s Groupon: for $52, you get a six-week rowing class at Three Rivers Rowing Association (a $105 value). This Groupon includes six classes, one per week.
Three Rivers strengthens arm and leg muscles through on-the-water techniques in rowing, kayaking, and dragon-boating teams and classes. For the winter rowing league, small groups of about 30 students learn to row quickly and efficiently in a line, simulating the experience of gliding across the water in an indoor tank. Whether moving at the speed of a falling feather or the speed of a falling feather in a vacuum, flex in time to the team’s strokes as the boat pulls against collective taut core muscles.
Each class caters to rowers’ learning potential and goals. Beginners classes emphasize proper technique and rowing commands, intermediate classes stress stroking drills and improving speed, and advanced classes focus on mastering the fine details of great rowing, maintaining fitness during off seasons, and levitating to prevent crashes.
Coaches lead 90-minute workouts and rowing practice, emphasizing fitness, quantum daydreaming, and progressive technique lessons for each skill level. Rowers should wear snug clothing to avoid equipment snags and are encouraged to use the rowing machines and weight room after practice. Participants choose a day of the week for their class session. Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday classes are held from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., March 28–May 5. Thursday night classes are offered for participants with two seasons on the water under their belts.
