The ocean floor is the least explored frontier, and our unfamiliarity with it leaves us open to threats from ornery crustaceans, second-tier superheroes, and dolphins that miss the thrill of tuna nets. Recon potential marine threats with today’s Groupon: for $20, you get a Salt Marsh Adventure Tour from Tideline Tours in Folly Beach.
Led by coastal scientist and 30-year Folly Beach resident Captain Anton DuMars, the Salt Marsh Adventure ushers groups of freshly minted mariners onto the water for a two-hour tour through the inlets, harbors, and tidal creeks of the Charleston coastline. Landlubbers board the Tideline and cruise off to explore the enigmatic ocean and enjoy a wildlife variety show featuring the acrobatic stylings of bottle-nosed dolphins alongside the death-defying aerial feats of egrets, ospreys, and herons. On entering Lighthouse Inlet, history takes the wheel as the watercraft motors by Fort Sumter, the first and only battlefield of the Civil War, and Fort Moultrie, whose wall of palmetto trees helped protect the country from the British invasion.
Captain Anton himself provides enthusiastic narration for the natural and historical points of interest, and the onboard hydrophone allows aquatic polyglots to eavesdrop on the rhetoric of local underwater life. The Tideline carries a cargo of 12 passengers and sails for the salt marsh daily at 9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
