The fact that Tlapazola Grill's recipes are anchored in Oaxaca doesn't mean the menu has to stay there. Nouvelle French influences sneak into the mix, making themselves apparent in the wild barramundi—sauteed with lime-caper sauce and served with julienne vegetables. And local ingredients form the base of nearly every dish: Niman Ranch pork, Mary's Free Range chicken, USDA Prime beef. But, for the most part, the kitchen plates up a tribute to southern Mexico. Mole-draped enchiladas and lobster-tail empanadas wash down with fine wines or cocktails crafted with selections from 120 tequilas.
The decor too stays grounded south of the border. Walls draw upon the color scheme of a desert, with the cerulean of an endless sky, the yellow of sand, and the orange of a crazed wanderer wearing a traffic cone for a hat. Earth-toned tile floors, earthenware vases, and bold Oaxacan paintings complete the scene, transporting diners as soon as they walk through the door. And for al fresco dining, a patio allows guests to mix their meals with sunshine and fresh air.
