For $49, you get a three-hour grilling class at To Grill or Not To Grill with a duo of flame-flaunting chefs that teach charbroiled techniques in Scottsdale (a $100 value). Most classes are currently scheduled for Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
To Grill or Not To Grill's three-hour classes are conducted by Chef Craiger, a man-about-flametown and skilled instructor with years of experience charring animals, vegetables, and minerals to a perfect crisp. Using a lively, comedic teaching style, Craiger will teach classes of 30 to 35 how to bring out the vibrant natural flavors of a wide range of comestibles with his impeccable gas-fired grilling techniques. Recent incarnations of the class have focused on grilled pizzas, such as the toscano, with prosciutto and arugula, or the provencal, with brie, tomato, and thyme. Vegetarians can join in the hallowed male ritual of gathering around a Weber, drinking beer, and offering cooking suggestions once Chef Craiger teaches them to grill salads such as the maestro—a grilled romaine-heart salad with red pear, candied pecans, gorgonzola, and dijon vinaigrette. Classes can also discuss grilled desserts, such as the bananas foster maestro recipe. Craiger demonstrates his grilling techniques for entrees, sides, and appetizers firsthand, and the entire class gets to taste items hot off of the actual grill throughout.
