Sight, the workhorse of the five senses, puts in too many hours keeping man from falling in manholes. Reward the most overworked sense with today's Groupon: for $15, you get two tickets to the Fernando Botero exhibition at Toledo Museum of Art ($30 value), on display through June 12.
Named America's favorite art museum by Modern Art Notes in 2010, Toledo Museum of Art features rotating exhibitions, including The Baroque World of Fernando Botero, a collection of more than 100 of the artist's paintings, sculptures, and drawings. A contemporary multimedia artist, Botero draws inspiration from baroque painters and his Colombian heritage, and many of his pieces critique life in Latin America, exploring comedy and violence through vibrant colors and beautiful, oversized figures. Curated by The Hague's Dr. John Sillevis, this is the first U.S. Botero retrospective since 1978 and the final stop of its road trip.
The museum's permanent collection contains more than 30,000 wide-ranging works of art, including important pieces by van Gogh, Matisse, and Rembrandt; a glass collection; and masterworks ranging back into antiquity. Founded in 1901, the museum has expanded its collection steadily over the last 110 years, now housing it in Pritzker Prize-winning architecture, a magically significant feat for all fine-art facilities. While members of the museum already have this exhibition covered under their membership, they can still buy this Groupon as a gift for member-less friends or to use as cultured kindling.
A small number of works in the Botero exhibition contain partial nudity or simulated violence.
