Q:

Hello - Great Groupon! I just had a question about weight limits for the passengers. My SO and I are both heavier and so I wasn't sure if it would work out depending on the size of the plane. Thanks!

Molly B.  asked on  Jan 29, 2013

A:

Thanks for your interest. We have the weight limits in place for two reasons. First and formost is that we are flying in a small aircraft which has limits to what we can carry legally. Secondly is that the cabin is small inside and comfort can become an issue. Some control inputs can also be limited if the passenger is of a certain stature, so all of those things combined have led to our policy for these flights.

Q:

If two pruchase together can they take the class together and schedule the flights back to back? Are the classes taken just prior to the flights or are they scheduled on different days?

Kandie D.  asked on  Jan 28, 2013

A:

Absolutely, they can be done together. The class is just before the flight, so we do it all in a couple hour period. The class time is also very laid back and informal as we want to keep it as enjoyable as possible. If you are purchasing together, please let me know who the participants are and that there will be two when you send me the email to set up scheduling. Thanks for the interest, and we look forward to flying with you soon!

Q:

What is included in the romantic tour for 2 and where all do you fly over?

Cheryl M.  asked on  Jan 26, 2013

A:

On a scenic tour we will spend a few minutes taking pictures with the aircraft (if you would like), and then we proceed with the flight. Some people prefer to fly over their home in the area, and other prefer to try and see the skyline of Pittsburgh. We are rather flexible on where we go for the flight, however, traffic, weather, and flight restrictions do prevent us from gauranteeing any specific flight. The vast majority of the time we are able to fly over where the client desires, but for the aforementioned reasons, we cannot gaurantee that. We encourage buyers to bring a camera so that they can capture the scenery, and the look on each others face! It is a fun time for all. Most people whom we have flown with for this type of tour have gone out to dinner or a movie afterwards to complete their evening.

Q:

I was reading the redemption instructions on your website and noticed that one of the requirements were proof of citizenship for the discovery flight. Is this also a requirement for the scenic flight or is a drivers license sufficient? I wanted to buy this as a surprise for my significant other.

Jolene M.  asked on  Jan 26, 2013

A:

The proof of citizenship is a requirement based upon the FAA's and the TSA's requirement that all who pursue aviation must provide proof of citizenship or complete the proper background check. That being said, it is not technically required for the scenic flights. However, in sticking with our policies, proper documentation must be provided in order to prove each passenger complies with current immigration laws. We feel it is our obligation to have the ability to identify those we fly with, and it is for those reasons we ask non-US residents who do participate in a scenic flight to still provide us with proof of identity and legal immigration status. We thank you for your cooperation.

Q:

My daughter just turned 17 and I would like to purchase a flight lesson as a present for her. Does the age restriction apply to the purchaser or the student? She is interested in learning to fly. Does she need to turn 18 before taking lessons? Thanks.

Daniel B.  asked on  Jan 25, 2013

A:

The age restriction is in place based on the FAA's requirements to earn a pilots license, and our legal responsibility to ensure our participants are willing and able. In this case of a discovery flight, there technically is no regulation saying that a person under 18 cannot learn to fly, or participate. So in a nutshell, you may purchase it, and gift it to your daughter. The only catch is that you will need to sign a liability waiver granting her permission to fly on that day. I am sure she will love the experience!

Q:

What is the $50 difference between this discovery flight (valued at $200) and the one listed on their website for $150? What is included in the Discovery Flight Package - 1 hour classroom lesson on the principles of flight and aircraft control - Hands-on introduction to the aircraft and it's system (approx 30mins) - Approximately 30 minutes of flight time - 1.5 hours of ground instruction from our certified instructors - 1/2 hour of flight instruction from our certified instructors - An overall value of $149 http://www.topnotchaviation.com/discovery.html

Craig S.  asked on  Jan 25, 2013

A:

Thanks for your interest, and I apologize for any confusion. Our website should have been updated to the new price of $199 for the discovery experience. Unfortunately the internal costs of fuel and aircraft rental have gone up significantly in the past 12 months, which has forced us to raise the price to $199 for the discovery flight experience. I apologize for any confusion, and will have our website updated ASAP.

Q:

Do you actually get to fly the plane? Or is it that you get the lesson and then the instructor flies the plane while showing you what you would do if you flew the plane?

joseph s.  asked on  Jan 25, 2013

A:

First of all, thank you for your interest. To answer your question, yes, if you purchase the discovery flight lesson, you will get a chance to actually fly the aircraft. For about 20 of the 30 minutes one of our flight instructors will be talking you through some basic turns and controls of the aircraft. I hope that helps answer your question!
