When your army of Easy-Bake Ovens has been deactivated by Y2010K, a tragic pastry-sized void may consume your days. Today's Groupon plays dental assistant to your sweet tooth with $20 worth of cakes and pastries from Torrance Bakery for $10. Locations in Torrance and Gardena, the former housing its own sandwich shop as well, are eager to pack your cheeks with baked and hand-prepared delicacies more pristine than sculpted hedges sculpted by the lasers used for eye surgery.
What started as a family-owned oven began to grow a bakeshop around its fiery furnace, and the rest is now history. Decades of experience dressing cakes for the Yule Ball have made the bakers at Torrance Bakery top-drawer pastry mechanics (check out their beautiful cakes). Make any day a cake holiday with yellow, red-velvet, marble, carrot, and Purple Rain cakes iced with buttercream, fudge, or chocolate French cream and filled with anything from custard to mango mousse to Bavarian cream to apple spice ($25 for an 8-inch, standard round cake). If your eyes seek sweetness in smaller packages, flirt with a line of fresh pastries such as large cinnamon sour-cream muffins ($1.40), blueberry scones ($.90), éclairs ($2.90), a slice of pumpkin pie ($2.90), cookies, brownies, bagels, and many more.
A lunchtime visit to the Torrance location will open up a smattering of salad and sandwich possibilities, from barbecue beef creations between bread to chef salads ($6.75) and soul-hugging macaroni and cheese ($2.95). Get a box of the goodies for the bowling team to make up for last weekend's barrage of gutter balls, or grab snacks for the office to solidify your nickname as Dr. Sweet Snacks.
The Los Angeles Times added Torrance Bakery to its list of great L.A. cupcakes.
