Q&A with Tim Gillengerten, Owner
What sets your business apart from your competition?
Transit Tees is an insider gift shop. We design and produce almost all of our items in Wicker Park. If you live in Chicago, you'll love the gentle nods to the city's subway system, maps, city seal, and flag.
What was the inspiration for starting this business?
While waiting at the Western Blue Line stop I realized that the signs at the platform were a form of contemporary art. The first line that was created for Transit Tees was the different L stops with the neighborhood incorporated into the sign.
What is the best reaction you’ve ever gotten from a customer?
"I know what that is" (when referring to our Loop Stripe T-shirt). I love the positive affirmations that we hear from our customers every day.
What’s your favorite part about your job?
Creating new designs and products daily, putting them out on the sales floor, and then hearing customers exciting in seeing them.
Is there anything else you want to add that we didn't cover?
The store is an eclectic mix of vintage posters, subway signs, reclaimed pallets that have been made into Chicago flags, old silk screens, Chicago-centric apparel, magnets with L stops and neighborhoods, glassware, pillows ... . A wide range of prices so that everyone can get a little piece of Chicago.
