Set during the final days of Stalin's reign of terror, Matéi Visniec's How to Explain the History of Communism to Mental Patients is a darkly funny drama with a very literal title. Writer Yuri Petrovski has been sent to teach the history of communism in a mental hospital, with the goal of enlightening and maybe even curing its patients. An existential and satirical look at Stalinism, the play examines the limits of political power and the peril within the cult of personality. Trap Door Theatre's production brings the dark comedy to Chicago.
