Like the earth, a sandwich is made of layers and gathers its strength from its meaty core, which pushes condiments toward the crust to erupt and bury fingers in deliciousness. Let rivers of mayo magma run with today's Groupon: for $5, you get $10 worth of sandwiches, pizzas, and other deli fare at Trattoria de Simonetta in Easton.
Newly opened Trattoria de Simonetta borrows its name from cofounder Phillip Simonetta, previously known for making some of the best sandwiches in Philadelphia. Simonetta has brought his hoagie prowess home with a menu ripe with substantial subs built atop a foundation of fresh bread delivered daily from New York. Representative beasts include the cuban–a toasted alliance of ham, swiss, pickle, sliced pork, and mayo that holds a one party rule over your mouth ($5.25 for 6", $7.25 for 12"). Pizzas allow diners to stockpile toppings like pepperoni, sausage, and bacon ($9.99 for 16", toppings $1.50 each), and the homemade minicannoli moonlights as a refreshingly conspicuous spyglass ($1.50). Hoagies and other deli delights can be consumed in the trattoria's comfortable seating area or ordered for takeout or delivery.
- Simonetta brings a host of deli faves like his hot roast beef (served smothered in gravy and melted provolone) and Lebanese classics, while co-owner Mariana Willett is cooking up her favorite family Spanish and Puerto Rican recipes like rice and beans and coconut flan. – Kelly Huth, Express-Times
- A mini cannoli was my dessert, presented on a silver-colored tray and sprinkled with confectionary sugar. The cannoli shell was fresh, light and crunchy, and the cheese-based filling had an excellent authentic Italian taste and texture. – Gail Scudder, EastonPatch
