Commonly Asked Questions

Q:

Is there an age limit?

Shirley Y.  asked on  Mar 24, 2012

A:

On the young end we prefer to stay above 14 years, but there are some exceptions (see previous answer). At the wise end, we certainly do not have an age limit, as long as they willingly sign themselves into the class.

Q:

We have hiked Pinnacles many times and find ourselves stopping to watch the rock climbers at the park. My husband and I plan to purchase a Groupon for us. We are very much looking forward to this adventure! If we get another as a gift for my cousin and his girlfriend who plan to visit from the Netherlands within the next couple of months, can both Groupons be redeemed at the same time? Thank you.

Kathy H.  asked on  Mar 27, 2012

A:

Hi Kathy, Thank you for your interest in our program, and yes Pinnacles is an awe inspiring spot to climb. We will definitely be able to schedule the four of you for a weekend at Pinnacles. During the summer time we schedule less classes in the park as the heat can become a bit much. However, our minimum group size is three, so given you haves someone visiting from outside the country, if there is a specific day you and your group would like to climb let us know well in advance and we can make sure we have the day available for you.

Q:

I am trying to select a date from your website and it keeps saying that every date is unavailable. I tried every Sunday in March, April, May, and June. I've purchased the groupon for one person and would like to go to Pinnacles. Thanks

A:

Pamela. Nice to hear you want to go to beautiful Pinnacles to climb. We've had more people interested in climbing at Castle Rock this spring and have therefore shifted most of our operations there. I'd be delighted to have a class at Pinnacles though. Send me the date you would like to go there via email (info@treksandtracks.com) and I'll see if we can get more than our minimum of three participants there.

Q:

Hi Jakob- Thanks for your response. However I just got an email from my good friend who works at Planet Granite (climbing gym in Sunnyvale). He said that the park has definitely not been taken off the closure list and that they just held a fundraiser on Wednesday to help keep the park open. He sent me this link to the Planet Granite website: http://planetgranite.com/news/?p=203 - as he knew I was considering purchasing this... On this page it says "we are not out of the woods yet" and it says that the executive director of Sempervirens (the group that is supposedly saving the park) was there at the event to speak and fundraise because the park definitely has NOT been saved and is still in anger of closure. All this just makes me nervous to purchase this deal. Do you mind telling me: 1 - Does the state park know you are selling climbing vouchers at a park that still might close? 2 - Just to be safe, can you at least promise that we will be refunded if the park does in fact close? Thank you for your time.

Dan, I appreciate you following up on this. I would love to discuss the details about the complexities of the park closure more if you would like. There is quite some depth to it. You are more than welcome to call (650-557-4893) or email me (info@treksandtracks.com). If we do not have a place to hold a class, we will happily honor a refund. Hope this helps!

Q:

I was under the impression that this park is scheduled for closure in a month or two. I just double checked and it is in fact on the state park closure list still: http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=26685 Is this for real? Is this deal a scam? How can we go climbing if the park is closed?

Dan J.  asked on  Mar 24, 2012

A:

Dan, thank you for bringing up this issue. Thankfully, the Sempervirens Fund, along with several other organizations have raised enough money to remove Castle Rock State Park from the closure list. I appreciate your concern, but Castle Rock State Park will stay open for now. Considering this happened recently, it appears the parks.ca.gov website hasn't taken it off their page yet. The Santa Cruz Sentinel newspaper has reported more details here: http://www.santacruzsentinel.com/ci_20166405/castle-rock-state-park-saved-from-closure-list?IADID=Search-www.santacruzsentinel.com-www.santacruzsentinel.com

My son is 11, but mature. Can he join me on this?

D L.  asked on  Mar 24, 2012

A:

We love having kids join us for our classes! When the parent is present and the class you participate in is at the beginner level, we are happy to have kids there.

Q:

Are there certain dates that these trip are on, or do you get to set the date.

Racheal H.  asked on  Mar 24, 2012

A:

Thank you for the question Racheal. Our classes are offered on weekends only, all year long. We are flexible as far as scheduling a date during the week goes though. Our minimum participant requirement is three. If you have a group of at least three you are welcome to request any date you like.
