Flying is often considered the fastest form of transportation, since cheetahs are difficult to saddle and motorcycles frequently jump over ravines to hunt herds of wildebeest on the other side. Soar over second-place vessels with today's Groupon: for $40, you get a one-hour introductory flight lesson from Tri-State Aero (a $99 value).
With federally licensed flight instructors, quality ground facilities, and well-maintained aircraft, Tri-State's flight school provides a stable base for serious students or an enabling experience for those simply following mankind's innate urge to fly. Amateur aviators spend the first half of the lesson on the ground learning the principles of flight, including basic aerodynamics and how the craft works. Before takeoff students assist in the preflight inspection, then help check the weight and balance to ensure the plane is in shape to fly and has finished its vegetables. During flight, students will be allowed to briefly take the controls and pilot the plane, and then review their voyage in a postflight debrief.
Having begun as a two-man operation teaching students and terrifying birds in Mt. Vernon, Tri-State Aero has now blossomed into a multiaircraft operation housed at Evansville Regional Airport. Those with further aeronautical ambitions can use this introductory lesson as one hour toward the mandated 40 hours necessary to acquire an FAA license.
