Building rock climbing walls is an easier way to get a mountain indoors than constructing a bio-dome around the Rockies or trying to get Mount Everest to return a dinner invitation. Scale man-made peaks with today's Groupon: for $25, you get an introductory climbing lesson and a two-week, indoor rock-climbing membership including equipment rental at True North Climbing on Carl Hall Road (a $50 value, including HST).
True North Climbing's experienced staff helps visitors of all skill levels scale indoor climbing walls up to 36 feet high. During an hour-long introductory lesson, instructors teach climbers how to stylishly don a harness and tie climbing ropes into figure eights, keeper knots, and industrial strength butterfly nets. Students also learn the proper way to take up slack from the belay device, assist their partners while they ascend footholds, and lower them gently back down to the facility's seamless padding. Graduated climbers then spend two weeks testing their new skills as they overcome 150 bouldering obstacles, scale the facility's 50 top ropes, and limbo under two slacklines under the watchful eye of staff members monitoring all gym activity.
As part of their membership, True North members can slip into the included climbing shoes and harnesses and lock up valuables in the changing room, before they scale the chimney area or point out dropped coins while dangling from a suspended stalactite. Two-week memberships begin the first visit after the introductory lesson.
