Though wetsuits in captivity are fun to observe on field trips, they truly yearn to be released back into their natural oceanic habitat. Help return a wetsuit to its home with today's Groupon: for $20, you get one introductory Try-Scuba Program at Underwater Adventures, plus a $50 credit that can be put toward any future scuba tuition. All classes begin at the Underwater Adventures dive shop for orientation, and are open to all students 10 years or older (people younger than 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian). All participants must know how to swim.
Treat your land lungs to an aquatic adventure with up to 90 minutes of supervised scuba time. Experienced instructors lead novices through the introductory course, starting with 20-30 minutes of theory in the dive shop. Afterwards, classes will trek to a local YMCA (transportation will be provided) to enjoy 45 minutes to one hour of in-pool guidance. Teachers will impart the tricks of the underwater-breathing trade using supplied scuba equipment, while instilling a strong sense of aquatic safety and sharing the basic skills necessary for growing gills. Throughout the session, feel free to ask questions regarding the fancy gadgetry or to gain information about future scuba opportunities hosted by Underwater Adventures. Those choosing to continue working toward certification will receive a $50 credit that can be used toward future tuition.
Scuba courses are generally held in the evenings or on weekends, and class sizes are kept small (8–10 people) to guarantee individualized attention and to make sure everyone can comfortably squeeze into a clown car should the need arise. Participants will feel like a real rubber-ducky Phelps during the splashing crash courses, as sessions take place in indoor heated YMCA pools. Call ahead to check the schedule and register for your Try-Scuba Program and then grab your bathing suit and towel for a dip into the deep.
Must sign liability waiver and medical statement.
