In an age of stringent airport security and fewer flights to Narnia, theater remains the easiest and most rewarding way to be transported to new worlds while seated in a row of cushioned chairs. Today’s Groupon invites you to one of 24 performances of Green Whales at Unicorn Theatre. For $15, you get one ticket to a Friday- or Saturday-night show at 8 p.m. (a $32.50 value). You can also get a ticket to a Sunday matinee at 3 p.m.; a Tuesday-, Wednesday-, or Thursday-night show at 7:30 p.m.; or the one-time Saturday matinee on March 6 at 3 p.m. for $12 (a $27.50 value). Shows start with the previews on March 3 and 4 and run through closing day on March 28. Once you receive your Groupon, call the theater’s box office to schedule the date you would like to attend.
Directed by Cynthia Levin and fresh from the theater’s In-Progress New Play Reading Series, Green Whales follows the romantic journey of Karen, a dateless 38-year-old philosophy professor whose teenage wardrobe causes most people to mistake her for a teenager. When her wacky sister hatches a scheme to find Karen’s perfect match, bizarre events lead Karen on a comically surreal quest for love.
The Unicorn Theatre is a cultural belly button of Kansas City that performs provocative contemporary art to spark emotions and stimulate discussion. Bringing a date to Green Whales will give you plenty of grist for conversation over coffee afterward, significantly decreasing the risk of babbling for hours about your yo-yo collection.
Preview shows on Wednesday, March 3, and Thursday, March 4, at 7:30 p.m. are a $22.50 value for adult tickets.
While critics have yet to comment on Green Whales, the Kansas City Star, PresentMagazine.com, Camp, and KC Confidential offer glowing reviews of Unicorn Theatre’s latest show, Grey Gardens: > * The cast is, in a word, spectacular. They all seem to be aware that they are treading on special ground, and give their performances their full attention. – Paul Donovan, Camp > * The set, designed by Gary Mosby, is a star in and of itself: intricate and comprehensive with its unique adaptability. – David Wayne Reed, PresentMagazine.com
CityVoters rave about Unicorn Theatre, naming it one of the best theaters in Kansas City in 2008 and 2009. Three Judy’s Book reviewers give the theater a solid four stars: > * Always thought-provoking theatre in an intimate setting. – Greg M., CityVoter > * They are always doing cutting edge, excellent quality theatre in my humble opion [sic]. – stashcase, CityVoter > * Not many people go and see plays at the Unicorn, but the few that do are lucky. The talent is so great, and under appericated [sic] in the Kansas City area. – James R., Judy’s Book
