The first rule of surfing is to look at where you want to go, rather than at the angry merman climbing onto your board. Learn the second rule with this Groupon.
Choose Between Two Options
- $75 for one 1.5-hour semi-private surfing lesson with video (a $150 value)
- $150 for one two-hour private introductory surfing lesson with video and/or photos (a $300 value)
The veteran instructors at University of Surfing tutor pupils on the basics of wave riding through classes. After steadying their footing on land, students mount longboards that help them safely outsmart the ocean's waves and the air's wayward seagulls. A maximum of four students convene during semi-private lessons to get 30 minutes of instruction and one hour of surfing. During this time, instructors document each student’s surfing technique and progress with video, using GoPro cameras and a Solo Shot robotic filmer. Alternately, private, two-hour introductory lessons use the GoPro device in addition to regular still cameras. For both options, instructors will send students a link that includes a collection of all the media recorded.
Since classes are taught in shallow waters during low tide, instructors can accommodate students aged 5–70 who possess basic swimming skills. An included wetsuit, booties, and hood keep skin comfortable no matter the weather or water temperature. Classes are usually held Saturdays and Sundays, with some exceptions; click here for the full calendar.
University of Surfing
As the owner and operator of the University of Surfing, Matt Cole has transformed incredibly talented surfers into an accomplished team of instructors. From Kyla Langen, the 2012 Bud Light Lime Tour Champ, and her globe-spanning surf career to veteran teacher and decorated pro surfer Kevin Rhodes, students reap the benefits of the instructors’ years of experience during two-hour introductory surfing lessons.
The University of Surfing designed their own method for teaching surfing—Surf Tourism—where first-timers can ride a wave like a real surfer. The staff also coaches intermediate surfers and offers private lessons, giving advice about paddling, proper standing technique, and proper burial technique for broken surfboards. In addition, the wave-loving group hosts daylong and overnight camps that cover the deepest aspects of surfing.
