For $55, today's side deal gets you a two-and-a-half- to three-hour introductory surfing course from the University of Surfing at Linda Mar Beach in Pacifica (a $100 value). All the necessary equipment—including a top-of-the-line soft, safe longboard, warm wetsuits, and booties—is included. Absolute beginners, out of practice novices, and transfer students are all equally welcome.
The University of Surfing is a licensed and insured institution where surfers of all proficiencies can better their boarding skills. Surfing 101 covers all the basics. Wet-and-wild class time at the university's beautiful beach campus starts with a brief overview of high-and-dry fundamentals practiced on the sand. The majority of the class time is spent tossing and being tossed by the scud and surge, carving foam like whipped-cream topping.
The experienced and certified coaches will be the guiding force behind the waves. Lessons are normally scheduled during beginner-friendly low tide, but you can schedule yours whenever if you can handle stronger seas. Just be sure to email ahead to book an appointment, and bring a towel, a swimsuit, sunscreen, and a signed waiver to the lesson.
University of Surfing
As the owner and operator of the University of Surfing, Matt Cole has transformed incredibly talented surfers into an accomplished team of instructors. From Kyla Langen, the 2012 Bud Light Lime Tour Champ, and her globe-spanning surf career to veteran teacher and decorated pro surfer Kevin Rhodes, students reap the benefits of the instructors’ years of experience during two-hour introductory surfing lessons.
The University of Surfing designed their own method for teaching surfing—Surf Tourism—where first-timers can ride a wave like a real surfer. The staff also coaches intermediate surfers and offers private lessons, giving advice about paddling, proper standing technique, and proper burial technique for broken surfboards. In addition, the wave-loving group hosts daylong and overnight camps that cover the deepest aspects of surfing.
